When he took office as the Deputy-Director of DG HOME, Simon Mordue was responsible for "curbing irregular migration…saving lives at sea and securing the EU's external borders" (See, The Commission, A Ogranisational structure, I The College of Commissioners, e Directorates-General). Simon Mordue has participated to create a discourse of opposition between "disorderly migration" and orderly migration". n September 2017, Simon Mordue stated that the EU needed to "do everything (they could) to disincentivize irregular migration" (See, The Commission, A Ogranisational structure, I The College of Commissioners, e Directorates-General, DG Home and migration policies)

He went on suggesting that the Commission was committed to an improvement of the conditions in Libya and that the "training provided by Operation Sophia (was intended to) increase the profesionalism and accountability of the LYCG which already (underwent) a robust vetting procedure before they began the training". (See, Commission, Criminalization of NGO) In October 2018 he participated in a conference in Rome which was part of the effort of creating a MRCC in Libya.
